When I first dreamed about growing my own vegetables, I imagined lush rows of leafy greens, vibrant tomatoes, and the satisfaction of harvesting something I planted myself. What I didn’t expect was how big a difference the design of the garden would make—especially our decision to use raised beds.
Our raised beds were built by Maurice. He planned, measured, sawed, and assembled them by hand, turning a patch of unused yard into a neat little oasis. Beyond looking great, those beds have completely changed how I garden.
Here’s why raised beds have been such a win:
🌱 Better Soil, Better Results:
I can control what goes into the beds—no more struggling with poor native soil. I filled them with a rich mix of compost, topsoil, and organic matter, and my plants are thriving.
🚿 Great Drainage:
No more waterlogged roots! Raised beds drain better than in-ground gardens, which means fewer issues with rot or disease.
🪴 Easier on the Body:
Bending over less makes a huge difference, especially when weeding or harvesting. My knees and back are grateful every time I step into the garden.
🦝 Fewer Pests (Sort of):
Okay, the squirrels still make guest appearances. But raised beds do help reduce some ground-level pest problems and keep things tidier overall.
🌼 Just Plain Pretty:
There’s something deeply satisfying about those neat, contained rows. It feels organized, intentional, and peaceful—like a little outdoor sanctuary.
Right now, I’m growing tomatoes, carrots, beets, cucumbers and beans. It’s been amazing watching everything come to life in these beds. I’ll be sharing updates throughout the season, along with lessons learned and the occasional garden drama.
If you’ve been thinking about starting a garden, raised beds are 100% worth considering—and if you’re lucky enough to have a handy partner, even better!
Maurice can help you too!
